About product

DH.91 Albatross (Franklin, Faraday) 1:72 (Valom)

A plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Czech firm Valom. The subject is the de Havilland DH.91 Albatross, one of the most elegant airliners of the 1930s, in a box devoted to two particular machines named Franklin and Faraday.

The real subject

The DH.91 Albatross was a British four-engine aircraft with a wooden monocoque structure, which allowed it to reach exceptionally clean aerodynamic shapes. The power was provided by air-cooled V engines arranged in a V and hung in narrow nacelles, thanks to which the machine kept its slender silhouette. Only a small series was built. The first two machines, Faraday and Franklin, arose to a requirement for carrying mail on long routes and differed from the later machines intended for passengers. During the war both were used in military service on liaison and transport flights.

Building and painting tips

Valom makes its molds in limited runs, so try the parts dry, level the mating surfaces and reckon with a little filling. Finish the interior before closing the fuselage, as on airliners a great deal is seen through the windows. Seat the engine nacelles according to the wing and keep checking the symmetry as you go. Mask the glazing and varnish it together with the surroundings. A clean aerodynamic shape needs a perfectly smooth surface: sand the parting lines with gradually finer grits and check the surface under the primer before painting. Gloss or metallic-looking surfaces call for a smooth base and thin coats of paint, so that the engraved details are not lost.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of airliners of the 1930s
  • Anyone interested in British aircraft design in wood
  • Modelers who build larger aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Builders with experience of more demanding sanding and smooth surfaces

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Rather not. Molds from limited runs call for dry fitting, filling and patient sanding.
