The real subjects

The Vought F4U Corsair and the Grumman F6F Hellcat are American single-seat fighters of the Second World War. Both types flew from aircraft carriers and from land bases, and the Corsair also made its name with Marine Corps units operating from island airfields. You can tell the Corsair by its gull wing and the Hellcat by its bulky, angular fuselage.

What the set contains

These are replacement wheels for both of the types named, in 1:72 scale, in the version designated as land-based. They are fitted in place of the wheels from the kit. In the small scale the kit wheels are usually split into two halves with a seam down the middle and with a soft tread pattern, so the change shows even though the part is barely a centimeter across. The number of pieces in the package and the breakdown of the parts by aircraft type are given in the manufacturer's instructions. The parts are not made of polystyrene, so make the joint with super glue.

Building and painting tips

• Cut off the excess material with a sharp blade a little away from the part and then sand the area down.
• Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry.
• Apply a primer; without it paint holds poorly on a smooth surface.
• Separate the hub and the tire with a circular mask or thin tape.
• Fit the wheels only after the landing gear legs and bays have been painted.
• Drill the axle out beforehand, because a small part seats better on a pin than on a flat face.
