A black metallic Acrysion shade with fine metal particles, to be laid on with an airbrush.

Metallic black is not the same thing as ordinary black. Fine metal particles float in the binder and once dry they give the surface a dark but living sheen recalling blued steel. That is exactly why this tone is reached for on the barrels and breeches of weapons, engine blocks, exhaust pipes, suspension springs, chains and gears. On figures it serves for the metal fittings of equipment, on cars for mirror frames, grilles and trim where glossy silver would look too loud.
The metal particles tend to sink to the bottom faster than ordinary pigment, so the mixing has to be thorough and is repeated during longer work. It is better to spray it a little thinner than opaque shades: a heavy coat lines the particles up into a flat mirror and the effect is gone. Two light mists, on the other hand, let the metal flakes settle at random and the surface then changes as the model is turned.
A flat coat over a metallic finish scatters the light and the shade turns gray into a dusty impression, so it is better to avoid a flat coat over it or to limit it to the surrounding areas. A dry film will take a light polish with a cotton bud, which brings the metallic sheen out further. Wash your tools and the nozzle right after work, since settled metal particles are far harder to remove from dried paint than the pigment of ordinary shades. If you reach for the product made for this range, even a hardened residue in the needle will give way. Small touch-ups with a brush on an already sprayed area leave visible streaks in a metallic surface, so it is better always to spray a repair over the whole thing.
