Camouflage Grey — a Vallejo Model Air acrylic paint

Camouflage Grey is an acrylic from the Vallejo Model Air range. According to the name it is a subdued camouflage gray — a color without gloss and without a pronounced undertone, built so that it looks restrained on a model and lets the shading and the detail stand out. The binder is water-thinnable, it is thinned with the acrylic thinner of the same brand and the package is a 17 ml dropper bottle.

Drying, layers and the final clear coat

A water-based acrylic is dry to the touch within a few minutes, but that is misleading — full curing of the binder takes hours. The difference shows the moment you lay masking tape on the paint or start working with washes: an uncured layer lifts or softens. Between individual passes a short pause is therefore enough, but before masking, decals and weathering let the model rest overnight rather than not. Model Air dries to a matte or semi-matte surface; that is ideal for the final look but not under decals. There you first have to apply a gloss acrylic clear coat, lay the decal down and bring the matte character of the surface back only with a final matte clear coat.
