Golden Yellow - a warm yellow in a dense acrylic

Golden Yellow belongs to the Artistic Dense range, that is among the dense acrylic paints in a bottle intended mainly for painting figures with a brush. The binder is acrylic, so the paint is thinned with water or with acrylic thinner — do not confuse it with the oil paints or lacquer sprays of the same name, as both the chemistry and the work with them are completely different. The shade is a warm yellow shifted toward gold: not lemon, but the kind that has a piece of orange in it.

Where the shade belongs

On figures a warm yellow is a color for small areas, not for large expanses. It suits the piping and trouser stripes of uniforms, cords, tassels, facings and lines of buttons, yellow elements of equipment and a base under golden metallic effects. It also behaves well as a highlight in ocher and brown areas — a drop into an earth tone lights up the edge of a fold without turning it white. Over a dark surface yellow is generally harder to build up than over a light one, so it pays to lay a lighter base or a thin layer of ocher under it.

How to work with it

• Thin it gradually: two or three thin layers give a cleaner tone than one heavy one, which would flood the engraving.
• On a dark surface lay a lighter intermediate layer in advance and you will save yourself several passes.
• It mixes with orange and with ocher into warm transitions and with white into highlights; break it with blue shades only carefully, as it turns green quickly.
• Shake the bottle before every use and close it well after work — a dense acrylic dries fastest on the rim of the neck.
