Wood is almost never done on a model with a single color. This shade serves as the starting tone, over which you then work with darker washes and lighter drybrushing to create the texture of grain and aging. On its own it gives a surface that looks like freshly worked wood with no patina.
The paint is based on a water dispersion and dries to a satin finish. On an absorbent base water is enough, but on smooth plastic the coat holds noticeably better after thinning with the maker's own product. Do not mix it with the lacquer ranges of the same manufacturer, because the binders are not compatible.
On ship decks and on wooden structures in dioramas it pays to vary the shade slightly from plank to plank. A completely uniform surface looks like plastic painted brown, not like wood.
Wood texture can also be suggested mechanically: before painting, just go over the surface with coarser abrasive paper along the future grain. The grooves are then brought out by the wash itself and the result looks more convincing than painted grain.
