Mr. Color - light gray - spray

Mr. Color light gray, 40 ml spray (Gunze)

The aerosol version of the modeling paint from the Mr. Color range by the Japanese manufacturer Gunze. Watch the chemistry: Mr. Color is NOT an acrylic, it is a solvent-based lacquer (nitro) paint. A lacquer paint forms an exceptionally hard, thin and durable film that holds on plastic extremely well, dries quickly and takes masking. The light gray shade is listed by the manufacturer as a gloss basic (primary) shade; it is tied neither to a particular vehicle nor to a particular army, it is a universal light gray. A gloss surface is also an ideal base under decals.

Use and safety, read before you press the valve

• Shake thoroughly before use, because the pigment settles to the bottom and unmixed paint sprays unevenly.
• Spray in thin coats from a distance and in several passes. Trying to saturate the surface at once leads to runs and to orange peel.
• A lacquer paint is aggressive to plastic. A heavy wet coat applied from close up can attack thin and delicate parts.
• Never spray over uncured acrylic or enamel, because the solvent dissolves them and the base wrinkles. Only a perfectly dry and compatible base belongs under lacquer, ideally a lacquer primer.
• Strong fumes. Spray outdoors or in a well ventilated area and use a respirator, because a cloth mask will not protect you from the solvent.
• Flammable. Do not spray near an open flame and do not store the can in the sun or near a heater.

Spray can or airbrush?

A spray can is fast and convenient, because there is nothing to thin and nothing to clean. It has its limits, though: neither the pressure nor the thinning can be controlled, so you will not manage fine transitions, misting, preshading or modulation with it. For that you need an airbrush and paint in a bottle. The ideal combination is a spray can for the base coat on large areas and an airbrush for the effects.
