Napoleonic Green - a uniform green in a dense acrylic

Napoleonic Green is a bottled acrylic paint from the dense Artistic Dense range intended for painting figures. It is thinned with water or with acrylic thinner. The name refers to the darker green wool cloth of uniforms from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries; we do not claim an exact match with any particular historical regulation, so take the shade as a starting green tone that you fine-tune to your subject.

Where the shade belongs

It is a typical color of cloth, not of vehicles. It suits the coats, trousers and cloaks of historical figures, the dark green of caps and facings, but also civilian garments, canvas and dark green accessories. Wool cloth is painted differently from metal: it needs soft transitions with no sharp edges, because fabric has no shiny highlights. The procedure that works is to lay the midtone over the whole area, add a shadow broken with brown or dark blue into the folds and pull the highlights out by adding ocher — not white, which grays a green.

How to work with it

• Working with a brush: take little paint and build the tone up in several thin layers, as a dense acrylic in one heavy layer will wipe out the engraving of the folds.
• On the large areas of a coat watch that the edge of the previous stroke does not dry — otherwise a visible edge will appear.
• Mix the shadow with brown or dark blue, the highlight with ocher or a light green.
• Before you close a figure up, try the shade on an offcut of sprue, so that you know how it behaves over your particular base.
