Replacement wheels for a 1:72 model of the armored HMMWV off-road vehicle. The tires are shaped as loaded: at the point of contact with the road they have a flattened contact patch and the sidewall slightly bulged, which the parts from the box usually lack. The tread is coarse, of the off-road type worn by vehicles deployed away from paved roads.

Why a loaded wheel changes the impression so much

Armored versions of the HMMWV, with their add-on plates, reinforced suspension and gunner's turret, tipped over ten tons, and rubber settles noticeably under such a load. A model in this scale is only around seven centimeters long, so the contact patch is among the few details by which the weight of the vehicle can be suggested at all. The vehicle then sits on its base instead of touching it only along a circumferential line.

How to fit the wheels

Before gluing, check that the flattened patch on all the wheels points downwards and lies in one plane, or the vehicle will stand askew. The seating surface of the hub usually only needs a light clean-up so that the wheel goes right home. Paint the rubber dark gray, not black; a dry brush and a fine pigment on the sidewalls and in the tread will do the rest.
