A filbert is a flat brush with a rounded end, something between the flat and the round shape. It has no sharp corners, so it leaves no hard edges behind and the stroke fades out smoothly. Size 6 is a medium one: it covers a larger area than a point would manage, yet it can still be used on a smaller part.
It proves itself wherever a transition matters rather than a line. Toning surfaces, soft shadows on a figure, lightening edges, spreading a pigment or an oil paint over a surface. The rounded end will handle dry brushing too: load very little paint, wipe the excess off on paper and pick out edges and rivets with light strokes. For thin lines, markings and points a round brush with a sharp point is better; keep the filbert for whatever should stay soft.
Clean it right after work, with the product matching the paint you used; paint dried at the ferrule will spread the brush for good. Never leave it standing hair down in a container, as that breaks the shape. After cleaning, straighten the hair back into its original shape with your fingers and let it dry lying flat or hair up.
