Italeri round brush no. 1 - for the finest detail

A round modeling brush from the brand Italeri in size 1. It is a tool for painting models, not a kit: the package contains the brush alone, no model and no paints. Size 1 is the smallest of this group of four and is intended for work where tenths of a millimeter matter.

Round or flat brush?

A round brush has its bristles drawn into a point, so it holds a tip and can carry paint into tight places, which makes it the choice for detail, lines and spot touch-ups. A flat brush has a straight edge, spreads paint in a wide stroke and suits straight continuous surfaces. On fine detail a flat brush will not replace a round tip.

What size 1 suits

• Instrument panels, dials and small levers in a cockpit.
• The eyes, eyebrows and face of figures, the very finest strokes.
• Small lettering, warning markings and spot highlights.
• Touch-ups around decals and repairs to paint that has gone over the line.

Why size 1 and not size 2

Size 1 holds less paint and has a narrower tip, so it is the brush for the last, smallest strokes, where you want precision rather than coverage. As soon as buttons, gear or larger pieces of an interior are involved, reach for size 2: with size 1 you would have to lay the paint down many times over and the coat would be uneven.

Care of the brush

• Clean it immediately after use with the thinner matching the paint (water for acrylics, synthetic thinner for enamels).
• Never store a brush tip down in thinner, because the tip will be permanently deformed.
• Do not press. Carry the paint on the tip, not by force; pressure splays the bristles.
• Do not let paint dry at the ferrule, because that is usually where a brush comes to its end.
• Once cleaned, shape the tip to a point and let it dry lying flat or tip up.

For modelers who paint with a brush and need one really fine brush for final detail: figure painters, builders of cockpits and interiors, and for touch-ups after airbrushing.
