About product

Eduard 1:35 King Tiger Porsche zimmerit — photo-etched Zimmerit texture

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard which brings the texture of Zimmerit onto a plastic model of the Tiger II heavy tank with the Porsche turret in 1:35 scale. It is neither a kit nor a paste in a tub: these are thin metal parts with a formed pattern that are glued onto the hull and the turret and so replace the laborious hand application of putty. The result has an even grain over the whole area and clean edges around the hatches, the vision ports and the welds.

The real subject

Zimmerit was a paste-like compound that the German army applied to the vertical armor surfaces of fighting vehicles from 1943. Once dry it formed a thick, uneven layer which prevented magnetic anti-tank mines from sticking. It was applied with a trowel and a comb, so it has a characteristic ribbed or waffle pattern and looks slightly different on every production batch. It was used until the autumn of 1944, when it was abandoned; vehicles with the early Porsche turret therefore commonly carried Zimmerit and a model looks incomplete without it.

Building and painting tips

Lay the parts on dry first and check their position against the hatches and the welds, and only then glue them with cyanoacrylate glue over smaller areas at a time so that nothing shifts. Touch in the gaps between the individual segments with a thin layer of putty and run a small comb over them so that the pattern continues. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer for metal surfaces. The broken surface of Zimmerit is ideal for dry-brushing, filters and pigments — dirt catches in the grain and brings out the relief of the pattern even more.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Tiger II with the Porsche turret who do not want to create Zimmerit from putty
  • anyone interested in a period-accurate rendering of German equipment of 1944
  • builders who already have experience of gluing photo-etched parts over large areas
  • collectors who want an even and repeatable result

It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A paste-like compound applied during the Second World War to the vertical armor surfaces of German vehicles. Once dry it prevented magnetic anti-tank mines from sticking and it had a typical ribbed pattern.

No, these are photo-etched metal parts with a formed pattern. You glue them onto the surfaces of the hull and the turret and use putty at most to touch in the gaps.

Fill the gap with a thin layer of putty and, while it is still wet, run a small comb or the tip of a knife over it so that the grain continues onto the neighboring part.

The set is shaped for the version with the early Porsche turret. Later vehicles had a different turret, and from the autumn of 1944 Zimmerit was no longer applied.
