On a model, brown usually ends up somewhere other than on extensive areas — and that changes everything that holds about choosing a shade for the scale. Brown FS30106 Matt is a matte acrylic paint from the Lifecolor brand with a matte degree of surface and the number of the American Federal Standard color standard given in the name. Wheels, running gear, straps, wooden parts, equipment, the earth under the model: those are the typical places where brown appears.
The rule about lightening shades for scale came about because of large continuous areas. Those offer the eye no point of comparison and look heavier than the reality warrants. But a small part is always surrounded by other colors, which give it that point of comparison, so it needs no compensation. When a modeler lightens the small brown elements as well, the result looks faded and the model loses depth in exactly the places where the viewer looks for it first. The practical guide is: the smaller the painted area is in relation to the whole, the closer to the subject the shade can stay. Brown is a typical example of this, because it almost never spreads across the whole model. The exceptions are extensive wooden decks and large earth areas in a diorama — there you are dealing with a large area and slight lightening is right, and in a smaller scale you need more of it.
For modelers of military vehicles, figures and dioramas and for ship builders who need a neutral brown for wooden and earthy elements.
