A two-row five by two grid gives ten positions for figures on 20 mm bases. It is a format for line units that are meant to form a line on the table rather than a compact block.

A line against a block

A shallow, wide footprint behaves differently from a square. A line takes up a large part of the frontage, comes into contact across its whole width sooner and covers the space between terrain features better; on the other hand it is more vulnerable on the flanks and needs more free room to turn than a square block of the same area. That is exactly why historical and fantasy battles use both shapes side by side: the line for a head-on clash, the block for pushing into depth. Smaller 20 mm bases also mean that a more numerous formation fits into the same width of table.

• The 20 mm figure has to match the bases of your figures.
• A two-row grid can be placed one behind another to create a deeper formation.
• A wide line is harder to thread between buildings, so allow for that when planning a move.

For players with figures on smaller bases who build line units and want to move them at once. It also suits cases where a collection should look like a close formation. Smaller 20 mm bases tend to be the domain of historical periods and mass battles, where more figures reach the table than in skirmish games, and that is where the time saved during moves shows the most.
