Six tones capture the camouflage of the North Korean Air Force, from the gray upper surfaces of the jet machines to the green and brown finishes of the helicopters and light biplanes. The palette is based on limited photographic material.
Responsibility details are not available.
The opening pair of tones, a neutral gray and a light gull gray, appears according to the source on the upper surfaces of the MiG-29 and MiG-21 fighters and of the Su-25 ground-attack machines. It is with these machines that the camouflage of the North Korean Air Force comes closest to what modelers know from other countries that operated this equipment.
The remaining quartet relates to a different part of the air arm. A light green covers the lower surfaces of the jet machines, but it also appears on the Mi-8 helicopters, on the light MD 500 machines and on the Polish-built An-2 biplanes. A moss green and a grass green and with them a fawn brown then make up the divided camouflage of the upper surfaces on these types.
The An-2 biplane is, moreover, not a marginal machine in the North Korean setting, as its appearance might suggest. It is precisely its wooden and fabric construction that makes it a type hard for radar to pick up, and for that reason a role is ascribed to it in the plans there of the kind that in other armies would be filled by considerably more modern machines.
It is one of the few ways of getting at a color scheme on a model for which very little pictorial evidence exists.
