The sheet of black polystyrene measures 15 x 30 cm and is half a millimeter thick. This thickness is a universal working choice: it holds its shape on bulkheads, floors and side panels, and at the same time it can still be bent into a gentle curve or cut through with a knife without filing.
Black polystyrene solves the problem of light showing through. When shrouds, shields behind headlights, the insides of tanks, instrument boxes or the blanking of openings that are meant to stay dark even when lit are being built, black material saves a coat of paint and keeps a sharp edge where a sprayed coat would creep in. It also serves as a neutral background for photographing a finished model.
The cleanest way to divide it is to score it with a scribing knife along a steel ruler and then snap it over the edge of a table; the cut edge then stays square and only needs a pass with a fine abrasive tool. It is glued with a thin cement for polystyrene, which draws the joint into the seam by capillary action, or with super glue where immediate strength is needed.
A curve is achieved by warming it over a source of heat, but carefully and gradually, because thin material reacts quickly. Before painting, degrease the area and roughen it with a fine abrasive so that the film takes hold.
It is divided by scoring with a knife along a ruler and snapping it over an edge, not by shearing.
