Precision Masking Tape 3 mm x 18 m from Hobby 2000 is a modeling aid, not a kit - the contents of the package are a roll of self-adhesive masking tape. It belongs to the Precision range, which means a straight, accurate tape for straight lines and sharp edges. The width of 3 mm is the widest of these narrow widths: it suits wider frames, dividing lines, transitions between surfaces and medium detail, where a thinner tape would have to be laid in two strips side by side. The roll holds 18 m.
Modeling tape is built for paint, not for a wall. Its tack is low and controlled - it clings enough to keep paint from creeping under it, but when lifted it does not tear off the paint or the primer. A sharply cut edge creates a sharp transition with no creep, which you will not get from torn packing tape. And once peeled off it leaves no adhesive residue.
The 3 mm width is also the least willing to bend: the wider a straight tape, the worse it takes a curve. The Precision range is straight in principle - push it into an arc and it will wrinkle and paint will creep under. For arcs, curves and rounded transitions Hobby 2000 therefore makes a separate Masking Tape For Curves range, which is elastic and stretchable and follows an arc without wrinkling.
For modelers who mask medium detail and straight surfaces rather than hairline lines. For ordinary precise work and canopy frames the 2 mm width is more suitable, for glazing frames and thin lines 1 mm, and for the finest micro-masking 0.75 mm.
An aid for painting, not a kit. Paints, thinners and the model are not included in the package. On delicate surfaces, test the adhesion in a hidden spot first.
