A square rod 1.1 x 1.1 mm in white polystyrene. The HO designation refers to lumber four inches on a side; on a model it yields posts, stakes and uprights.

A square section one point one millimeters on a side comes from a range that copies the dimensions of structural lumber. The HO designation in the name does not mean the material belongs to railroads only: it says by what key the dimension was derived. A real beam four inches on a side works out at exactly this value when reduced to 1:87. It can be used anywhere, though, because what decides is the figure in millimeters, not the origin of the name.
It looks most natural as a fence post, a pen stake, an upright under the roof of a bus stop, the leg of a bench or a brace for boarding. A regular square also makes it easier to build lattice girders, where the pieces meet at a right angle and do not have to be turned into the correct position. In larger scales it serves as a thin tubular brace or a square railing bar.
Posts come out the same height when they are cut against a prepared gauge and pushed into pre-drilled holes in the base of the diorama. The point of a stake takes a few passes of sandpaper held flat. Weathered wood is imitated by drawing the rod across the edges of a coarse file and then coating it with thinned brown paint, which draws into the grooves.
