About product

RLM 70 - an AK interactive Air Series acrylic

A bottled paint from the Air Series aviation range of the AK interactive brand. It is a water-thinnable acrylic supplied already in airbrush consistency, so before spraying it is usually enough to shake it thoroughly and pour it into the cup. The AIR suffix is the name of this range, not a fault in the name. It can be thinned further with water or with acrylic thinner of the same brand. The RLM 70 designation is the period code of the shade from the German aviation color system, as the manufacturer states it.

The shade and where it comes into play

A very dark green with an almost black impression, used in modeling above all on the upper surfaces of the wings and fuselage in two-color schemes and on propeller blades. In scale it is so dark that without lightening it merges into a black area with no detail, so it is recommended to brighten the middle of the panels by mixing in a little lighter green or gray. Over a light base it covers quickly, but that is exactly why it easily floods engraved detail if you lay it on too thickly.

Airbrush: a hard versus a soft edge

Two-color schemes with this paint typically have a sharp division between the two greens. A hard edge is made by a mask laid directly on the surface, but take care that paint does not run under its edge: spray at right angles to the edge, not at an angle under it, and lay the first coat on almost dry. If you want a half-soft edge, back the masking tape with a thin thread of modeling putty and lift it a fraction of a millimeter above the surface; the higher, the softer the transition. Take the mask off while the paint has just dried, not after several days, when it will tear off the coat beneath it as well.

Who the paint is for

  • modelers of Second World War aircraft building two-color schemes
  • airbrush users who want a paint with no thinning of their own
  • those who work with masks and care about the quality of the edge
  • modelers who prefer an acrylic thinned and cleaned with water

Keep out of the reach of children, use extraction and respiratory protection when spraying and shake the bottle thoroughly before use.

FAQ

In the Air Series range it is a water-thinnable acrylic. The brand also carries the same shade code in a lacquer range, which must not be thinned with water, so always check the range on the bottle.

As a rule no; the Air Series range is supplied in airbrush consistency. It can be thinned further with water or with acrylic thinner of the same brand.

It is very dark and on a model it merges into a uniform area. Brightening the middle of the panels gives the surface depth back and brings out the engraved detail.

With a mask laid directly on the surface, by spraying at right angles to the edge and with a first coat laid on almost dry, so that paint does not run under the edge of the mask.
