The color

A dark blue from the Real Colors range by AK Interactive in a 17 ml bottle. The shade is deep and low in value, so on the model it works as a solid continuous area rather than as a cast. In shadow it comes close to black, while on lit edges the blue tone clearly steps forward.

What it is good for

It is used wherever a surface has to be uniformly dark: on upper surfaces and sides, on single-color finishes and on contrasting fields next to lighter gray tones. Because a dark area swallows detail, it pays to lighten it with a graded cast once it has dried and to pick out the edges with a lighter blue. Without that the model merges optically into a single blot and the shapes are lost. The shade serves equally well as a dark base for lighter tones from the same range.

Application

Stir the paint properly before work; with dark shades settled pigment shows only once the coat goes on unevenly. Spray thinly and in several passes, because depth of color comes from repetition, not from one heavy coat. Wash and degrease the surface beforehand. Apply the masks before spraying and remove them only once the paint has dried. A dark coat also needs longer before it is truly dry to the touch, so do not rush the masking of the next area. The recommended thinner, the thinning ratio and the way to clean your tools are stated by the manufacturer; follow its instructions.
