The contrasting counterpart of the light hull gray is presented by US Modern Dark Grey, a water-based acrylic paint for the darker surfaces of modern American warships.
Responsibility details are not available.
There is not one gray on a modern American ship. Beside the light hull gray a second, markedly darker tone is used, covering the horizontal surfaces and selected parts of the superstructures. US Modern Dark Grey is a water-based acrylic paint for precisely this role, and without it a model lacks the difference that is visible on a real ship even from the shore.
Where the darker tone sits
The division of light and dark gray is not accidental. The surfaces that are walked on and that the sun falls on from above have a different shade from the vertical sides; a darker gray moreover takes operational dirt more readily. On a model this means setting the decks and the upper surfaces darker and leaving the sides lighter: only then does the model look like a ship and not like a single-color casting. The same principle holds for small surfaces as well: bridges, gangways and the upper covers of the armament follow the color of the deck, not the color of the side.
It will be appreciated by modelers who devote themselves to present-day gray ships and want to keep them readable. It will also serve well in smaller scales, where it is precisely the contrast between the deck and the side that keeps a model from merging into one surface.
Do not swallow the paint and keep it out of the reach of children. When spraying, ensure a supply of fresh air and protect your airways.
