A painted stone on a figure works only when it has two clearly separated halves. Light enters a cut stone, reflects off the back wall and comes out on the opposite side from where it came in, which is why the upper part of an emerald is dark and the lower light. The set offers four tones for that: Black Green, Emerald, Pastel Green and White, that is a ready made scale from the deepest shadow to a sharp glint.
First the whole area of the stone is established with the darkest green. Then the lower half is filled in with the emerald and the boundary between the two fields is left sharp, drawn straight across the whole stone if you like. The pastel green lightens only the lower edge, that is the place farthest from the light source. Finally the white comes: one small point in the upper dark part and a thin line on the lower edge. The whole charm lies in the transitions not being blended.
The same scale can be used on glass and on polished potion bottles too, where only the area over which the whole transition runs is made smaller. The shades mix with one another and go together with other acrylics of the same line, so a stone shade of your own can be fine tuned. With larger areas, for example an orb on a staff, it pays to run the division slightly at an angle, so that the stone does not come across as flat.
