Note: X-21 Flat Base is not a paint or a matte varnish. It is a flattening additive from Tamiya's Acrylic MINI range in a bottle with a volume of 10 ml. It is added into a gloss paint or varnish and reduces its shine — turning a glossy surface into a semi-gloss or matte one. On its own it has no covering color function and is not sprayed or brushed on by itself.
Always mix the additive well — it settles. Add it to the paint gradually and in small amounts, and test the result on a sprue offcut, not directly on the model. Too much additive causes a whitish (milky) haze and a washed-out, chalky-looking paint — less is more here. The mix can be thinned for an airbrush with Tamiya's X-20A thinner. Apply it in thin coats; a heavy coat increases the risk of haze.
For modelers who want to control the gloss level themselves and do not want to buy both a matte and a gloss version of every shade. Builders of military vehicles, aircraft and figures, where a matte or satin finish is the norm, will appreciate it. The 10 ml volume lasts a long time, since it is used in small doses.
Intended for modeling use, not a toy. Work in a well-ventilated area, use respiratory protection when spraying with an airbrush. Keep out of the reach of children.
