About product

Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow (Enamel) - matte enamel paint, 10 ml

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow from the enamel (synthetic) line is a solvent-based paint in a bottle of 10 ml. At Tamiya the letters XF mean a matte shade - the surface does not stay glossy once dry.

Dunkelgelb - the base of German armored vehicles

This is probably the single most important tank color there is. The shade corresponds to the German Dunkelgelb (dark yellow) and the manufacturer recommends it directly for German armored vehicles. From 1943 on, Dunkelgelb became the standard factory finish of German armor and replaced the earlier dark gray (Panzergrau) that had been the standard before it. Over this yellow base, often only at units in the field, green and brown camouflage patches were sprayed or brushed on. That is exactly why XF-60, together with the dark green XF-61 and a brown, forms the basis of the typical late-war German scheme.

Careful: enamel, not acrylic

The number XF-60 is issued by Tamiya in two lines. This item is the enamel - a solvent-based (synthetic) paint thinned with X-20 thinner (without the letter A). The acrylic version of the same number is water-thinnable and uses X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable.

Use

  • Airbrush and brush. For spraying, thin the paint with X-20 - the manufacturer gives a starting ratio of roughly 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint.
  • Apply it as the base coat of the whole vehicle in thin coats, and only then spray the camouflage patches over it - the edges of the patches can be soft (airbrush held close) or hard (masks).
  • Before decals, give the surface a coat of gloss clear, otherwise a white film appears around the carrier film. The final clear coat restores the matte look.
  • The shade is an excellent base for washes, filters and dust pigments - modulation and dirt give a large surface depth.
  • Do not apply lacquer clear coats directly onto enamel that has not dried through.

Who the paint is for

For everyone building German armored vehicles of the late phase of the Second World War - and in a broader sense for modelers of military vehicles who need a reliable matte yellow-brown base color for camouflage schemes and dioramas. Usable in every scale.

Safety: flammable liquid. The vapors irritate the airways. Use only in well-ventilated spaces, provide respiratory protection (a respirator) and protect your skin and eyes. Keep out of the reach of children and away from sources of ignition.

FAQ

Yes. XF-60 Dark Yellow corresponds to the German Dunkelgelb - the base shade of German armored vehicles from 1943 on, when it replaced the earlier dark gray (Panzergrau). Green and brown camouflage patches were then applied over this base.

It is the enamel - a solvent-based (synthetic) paint thinned with Tamiya X-20 thinner, that is, without the letter A. The acrylic version of the same number XF-60 is water-thinnable and uses X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable.

For the typical late German scheme, the dark green XF-61 Dark Green and a brown shade are applied over an XF-60 base. The combination of XF-60 and XF-61 is the most common pair for a three-color camouflage.

Yes. At Tamiya the XF prefix means a matte shade. For the airbrush, thin it with X-20 thinner (a starting ratio of about 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint). Before decals, give the surface a coat of gloss clear first.
