About product

Suzuki RG400 Early Version, the red and white form with an under cowl, 1:12 (Hasegawa)

A kit of the motorcycle in 1:12 scale in injection-molded plastic. By its name this is the early form of the RG400 model in the red and white color combination and with the lower engine cowl. The set is meant to be assembled and painted; the number of parts and the extent of the decals are given on the packaging.

The real subject

The Suzuki RG400 Gamma was a road two-stroke introduced in the middle of the 1980s, derived from circuit racing machinery and offered above all on the Japanese market. It was powered by a liquid-cooled square-four of close to four hundred cubic centimeters, complemented by an aluminum frame and full fairing. The model came about as the smaller sibling of the five-hundred version, to suit the Japanese licensing and displacement classes of the time. The lower cowl under the engine is a typical element of replicas of racing machines of that period.

Building and painting tips

Motorcycles in 1:12 scale stand or fall with the order of work: first finish the frame and the engine including the plumbing and the exhausts, and only then close the fairing up. On the plastic use a thin modeling cement, which flows into the seams by capillary action. Spray the colored fairing parts over a surfacer and apply the gloss paint in thin layers with an airbrush; the decals then settle on the glossy surface without silvering. Mask chrome and polished surfaces rather than spraying over them. A final clear varnish evens out the transitions between the paint and the decals.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese road machines of the 1980s
  • Modelers who want to combine gloss paint with a detailed engine
  • Builders with experience of multi-part fairings
  • Those interested in 1:12 scale, which allows fine work on detail

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, it is a classic plastic kit. The parts are nipped off the sprues, glued and painted. Neither glue nor paints are included in the package.

It is the lower part of the fairing beneath the engine, typical of replicas of racing machines. By its name it is included in this package.

The number of parts and the extent of the decal schemes are given on the packaging.

The 1:12 scale is rewarding, but a motorcycle calls for careful painting of the fairings and a precise order of assembly. At least basic experience is advisable.
