The Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS is a more sportingly tuned version of the Japanese mid-size sedan from the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. The SSS designation meant a more powerful form with a pair of carburetors, stiffer suspension and a richer set of instruments. The car made its name above all in rallying, where it profited from a simple and durable design, independent suspension and low weight. The angular body with prominent fender flares is among the recognizable shapes of Japanese car design of that time, and a front spoiler under the bumper was a popular period accessory.
An angular body with sharp edges forgives little. Sand the parting lines carefully, so that the edge stays sharp, and check the shape against the light. The chrome accessories, of which this subject has quite a few, should either be kept in their original finish or oversprayed with a specialized chrome paint on a smooth gloss base. The trim strips can be brought out with a fine brush or with chrome decal film. Spray the base color with an airbrush in thin coats over primer, and apply gloss varnish before the decals. Finish the interior with the instrument panel before the body is closed. Pay attention to the windows; on cars of this period they are large and are visible from inside as well.
