An injection-molded plastic kit of a figure in 1:24 scale from the maker Suyata, from a series devoted to the Japanese Sengoku period. It captures an ashigaru, that is, a common foot soldier, in a red version of armor. It is a figure kit, not a finished statuette; the parts are cut off the sprue, glued and the model is painted.
The ashigaru were the foot soldiers of Japanese feudal armies and made up the most numerous element of the forces of the Sengoku period, that is, roughly between the fifteenth and the start of the seventeenth century. Unlike the samurai they did not come from the warrior class, and their equipment was simpler and mass-produced: light lamellar or plate armor over the torso, a conical helmet and long spears, bows or later firearms. The color of the armor and the marks on it helped to tell the allegiance to individual clans and units apart, which is also the reason why the same figure is offered in several color versions.
Assemble the figure dry first and check how the parts of the armor follow on; with segmented armor it is usually better to paint the segments separately and glue them together afterwards. Trim the parting seams on the arms, legs and helmet with a scalpel and sand them gently. Apply cement for plastic with a brush into the seam, in a minimum amount only. Before painting, apply a thin primer. Lamellar armor calls for patience: the base shade, a wash in the seams between the plates and a lightening of the upper edge of every lamella. Model the skin with thinned glazes in layers. Tell the wooden parts of the shafts and the cloth accessories apart by texture, not just by color.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
