The coffin in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MAiM is a prop you do not see often among scenic accessories, and that is exactly why it can give a diorama a subject you will not see elsewhere. It is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted, so you decide yourself how the finished scene reads.
A grave subject calls for sensitive treatment, but it offers strong scenes: a field burial in the Second World War, a mortuary behind the front, a churchyard corner with a church, a western or a grim post-apocalyptic picture. The coffin also works as an unobtrusive load on the bed of a truck or a cart. In 1:35 scale it fills out naturally with ordinary figures and vehicles, and it also gets on well with the other props from MAiM, with shovels, crosses and rubble.
A coffin is the ideal exercise in painting wood: over a light brown acrylic base lay a darker oil wash and draw it out with a flat brush in the direction of the imagined grain, and the natural figure of the planks appears. Bring out the edges with a dry brush, and for an old weathered coffin add grayish dried-out tones and fine cracks with a pencil. A polished funeral version, by contrast, takes a dark stained brown with a satin clear coat.
The accessory is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
