This photo-etched brass set in 1:35 scale is meant for completing a plastic kit of the American M1A2 Abrams main battle tank in the late configuration of the TUSK II fit. It is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory for the modeler: the metal parts replace coarser plastic sheet, mesh and holders and add features that injection molding cannot create. The set is developed for the Dragon 3536 kit.
The M1A2 Abrams is an upgraded version of the American main battle tank with a 120 mm gun and gas turbine power. The TUSK II kit is meant for operations in built-up areas and brings add-on armor for the sides, protection for the area around the hatches and a remote controlled weapon station. The later configuration differs from the earlier ones in details of the equipment on the hull and the turret, that is in exactly the small items a photo-etched set is bought for.
Photo-etched brass behaves differently from plastic in the final weathering as well. Worn edges can be made by carefully sanding the paint through with very fine abrasive paper or a glass pencil; metal appears beneath the paint and looks convincing in its own right, with no need to paint silver on afterwards. At the same time, a primer has to lie beneath a thin coat of paint, otherwise the weathering will also scrape off what you do not want scraped. Washes and dust effects work splendidly on photo-etched parts, because the fine edges and perforations give them plenty of places to catch; wipe the excess in the direction of the run and let the tone settle above all in the corners and behind small sheet pieces.
A photo-etched set is an accessory for modelers; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
