Thirty cast parts represent jerrycans of pressed plastic, that is, the containers that replaced the sheet metal version in the second half of the century. A sheet with decals for marking the contents and warning lettering belongs to the set.
Responsibility details are not available.
The jerrycan changed more with pressed plastic than it seems at first glance. The pressed cross-shaped stiffeners that held the shape of the sheet metal container disappeared and were replaced by a thicker body with softly rounded corners. The handles merged with the shell into one piece and the neck received a substantial threaded cap. The result is an object that on a diorama moves the scene into a newer period at once, even if everything else stayed the same.
Cast resin reproduces a soft rounding better than injection-molded plastic, because the mold does not need a parting line run across the most prominent edge. The surface of a casting tends to be smooth to glossy and that matters for this set, because decals belong with it. A decal needs a smooth surface beneath it, otherwise air is trapped under the film and the edge goes white. Gloss varnish is therefore applied to the casting, the decal is laid into the still wet coat and only once dry is the whole thing evened out with a matte overcoat.
The castings sit on a casting block, which is cut off with a saw with fine teeth. Sanding resin releases a fine dust, and that is why the work is done wet or with extraction. It is sensible to cut small parts such as the cap off only at the moment they are actually being glued, because once released, a piece of this size is hard to find.
Thirty parts is a number that can carry a whole store. The jerrycans can be lined up along a wall, loaded onto a truck bed or scattered around a post, and a differing shade of the caps from one delivery makes a group that does not look like copies of one piece.
