A photo-etched metal set intended for refining the detail of a plastic model of the American M1A1 main battle tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the tank, but an aftermarket accessory with which plastic items are replaced in the places where injection-molded plastic cannot capture a thin wall convincingly. On a modern tank these are mainly the grilles above the powerpack, the covers, the hinges, the loops, the clamps and the fine brackets for equipment on the hull and the turret. The scope of the package follows the manufacturer's instructions.
The M1A1 Abrams is an American main battle tank powered by a gas turbine and armed with a 120 mm smoothbore gun, which replaced the 105 mm rifled barrel of the original M1 version. It combines composite armor, a powerful fire control system and high mobility. Besides the ground forces the type was also used by the Marine Corps, which adapted the vehicles for expeditionary service. The type stayed in service for whole decades thanks to successive upgrades.
Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out. Level the remains of the tags after cutting with a fine file. Make the folds along the marked score lines, ideally in a photo-etch bender. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; on large surfaces an epoxy gives more time to position the part. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer. On modern vehicles it pays to make sure the fine grilles stay open, so spray them with thinned paint in thin coats. Once painted, the sharp edges of photo-etched parts take a wash and drybrushing nicely.
