A set of decals in 1:48 scale from the maker Two Bobs, devoted to the two-seat Super Hornet of the test and evaluation squadron VX-9 in a commemorative form for the centenary of American naval aviation. The product holds no construction parts — it is purely a decal sheet for a model you build from a separately sold kit.
VX-9 is a test and evaluation squadron of the US Navy. It does not fill combat duties in the ordinary sense, but tests armament, systems and tactics before they are introduced to operational units, and for that reason it operates a wider spectrum of types than an ordinary squadron. For the centenary of naval aviation, selected machines received commemorative finishes that referred to historic schemes from earlier stages. On the two-seat Super Hornet, otherwise operated in an inconspicuous two-tone gray, such a form looks particularly striking — and that is exactly what makes it attractive to modelers.
Commemorative schemes tend to be made up of large areas that cross edges, cover transitions and the canopy on the model. Never lay a large decal down all at once: slide it only partly off the backing, seat the edge you have under control, and then unroll and press the rest down gradually from the center toward the edge. Push air pockets out with a soft damp brush, not with your finger. At sharp edges it is better to score the decal with a scalpel in the direction of the fold — the cut stays invisible once it has dried, whereas folded film creates a permanent wrinkle. Let the model dry overnight before the final clear coat.
