A decal sheet in 1:48 scale from the maker Two Bobs. The package holds decals only — you build the aircraft model from a kit that is sold separately. The subject of the sheet is J-10 machines in the form of an air display team, that is in finishes that differ markedly from the ordinary operational ones.
The J-10 is a single-engine multi-role fighter of Chinese manufacture. Aerodynamically it derives from a layout with a delta wing complemented by canard foreplanes, which improve handling at high angles of attack. The air intake is placed under the fuselage, and from the start the machine is conceived as an unstable airframe with fly-by-wire control. The type is used both for air combat duties and for attacks on ground targets, and in later versions it went through modifications to its radar and its engine. Machines set aside for public air displays wear different, multi-color finishes meant to make the aircraft stand out against the sky.
With colorful display schemes the main risk is the surface underneath showing through. Light motifs, above all white and yellow elements, do not have enough covering power on a dark finish unless there is a white underprint beneath them. So it pays to choose a base coat such that the decals lie on a light surface, or else to spray a fine white outline under a large motif. Check the sheet against the light before you work — you will see where the print is dense and where it is thin. Deeply colored decals will moreover bring out every irregularity of the surface, so matured gloss clear and a light sanding with 2000 grit abrasive repay themselves most here.
