This set from the Hungarian manufacturer HAD models combines a decal sheet with photo-etched parts. It holds the Hungarian license plates used on vehicles from the 1950s to the end of the 1990s, prepared for 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory for a finished vehicle model.
On a real vehicle a license plate is a separate plate that stands off from the body and casts a shadow. A decal stuck on the plastic on its own will not create that impression, because it stays in the plane of the surface. A photo-etched plate gives the number plate a real thickness and crisp edges, and a decal then adds the lettering and the artwork on top of it. The result is markedly more convincing than a printed area, especially in 1:48 scale, where small parts can already be examined closely.
Separate the photo-etched plate carefully from the fret with a sharp knife or photo-etch scissors on a cutting surface, flatten it and clean the burrs off with fine sanding paper. It is advisable to spray it with a base coat, so that the decal and the final varnish hold on the smooth metal. Varnish the area meant for the decal with gloss clear coat, cut the design out closely, soak it in lukewarm water and slide it onto the plate, soak the surplus water up and let it dry thoroughly. Glue the finished plate to the model with cyanoacrylate glue or with a glue for photo-etched parts, as ordinary plastic cement does not hold on metal. Finally unify the surface with a matte varnish and weather it lightly, as a number plate tends to be the most grimy detail on a vehicle.
