Wooden barrels in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Brengun are a diorama accessory for a store, a yard or the support area of an airfield. This is not a kit but scene equipment.

Wooden barrels are among the most universal props there are. In a scene in 1:48 scale they suit a store, a yard, a workshop, the support area of an airfield and the bed of a truck, and they are not tied to any period: they work just as well in a scene from the first half of the twentieth century as in a civilian one. The product is an accessory to what you already have built, not a model in its own right.
They work best in a group and in varied positions. Several barrels standing by a wall, one laid on its side and one rolled off to one side look livelier than a regular row. If you are building a scene with figures, a barrel serves at the same time as an improvised table or seat and naturally gives the scene some variation in height. Barrels also come in as a visual screen with which a less successful spot on the base can be covered.
Convincing wood arises by layering, not from a single shade. Start with a light base, for example a sand or beige color. Then apply a thin oil glaze in a brown tone and wipe it off at once with a brush drawn along the grain, which produces the irregular figure of wood. When it has dried, go over the edges with a dry brush in a lighter shade so that the knocked-about edges stand out. Paint the metal hoops in dark steel and add fine patches of rust to them. Finally unify the whole with a weak dark wash and, if you wish, suggest dust on the lower part of the barrel with pigments.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
