About product

Flyhawk 1:700 — metal barrels for the battleship HMS Agincourt

A set of turned metal barrels in 1:700 scale meant for fitting out a plastic kit of the British battleship HMS Agincourt. It is not a model of the ship and not a complete detail set either — these are the barrels alone, with which the plastic parts from the base kit are replaced. That has to be obtained separately.

The real subject

HMS Agincourt was a British battleship of the period of the First World War with an unusual history. She was originally built to a foreign order, before the outbreak of the war the Royal Navy took her over and she entered service under a new name. She became famous for a record number of main-battery turrets distributed along the length of the hull, thanks to which she has an entirely unmistakable silhouette among the ships of her time.

Why metal barrels in 1:700 scale

It is precisely on this ship that replacing the barrels makes the most sense: the main armament is spread over many turrets, so the difference tells along the whole length of the model. An injection-molded barrel a tenth of a millimeter in diameter tends to be rounded, short-shot or bent and never has an open muzzle. A turned metal part is straight, has a correctly thin profile and crisp edges, and in this scale it is a detail even a layman notices.

Work tips

Work over a light surface with raised edges; the parts are genuinely tiny and on a carpet they are searched for in vain. Cut the plastic barrels off with a sharp scalpel at the root and widen the holes with a micro drill, ideally in a hand drill. Degrease the parts with spirit, take hold of them with fine tweezers and glue them with the smallest possible drop of cyanoacrylate applied with a wire. Apply the paint over a base for metal, otherwise it will come off the barrels at the first handling.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want to take the armament on a build all the way to detail
  • Those interested in British battleships of the First World War
  • More experienced modelers used to working with micro parts

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which is not part of the package. Glue, paints and tools are not enclosed.

FAQ

It is not. The set holds only metal barrels for a plastic kit you have already bought.

The number of barrels is stated on the box of the set.

They are cut off with a sharp scalpel at the root, the hole is widened with a micro drill and the metal part is glued in after degreasing with the smallest drop of cyanoacrylate.

It is work with micro parts, which calls for tweezers, patience and good light. For a first ship model it is not an ideal start.
