About product

SMS Lützow 1916 in 1:700 scale from Takom, the full hull guise

It is an injection-molded plastic kit of a surface ship in the tiny naval scale 1:700. The Full Hull designation means that the box holds the hull below the waterline as well, so the model can be built as a complete vessel and displayed on a stand or in a base, not just as a waterline silhouette seated into the water. The contents of the package are stated on the box.

The real subject

The Lützow was a battlecruiser of the Derfflinger class, that is, of a type that combined artillery close to that of battleships with higher speed and lighter armor. The main armament was made up of eight guns of 30.5 cm caliber in four twin turrets arranged on the center line of the ship. Characteristic of this class is the long slender silhouette with a flush deck, two funnels and a massive forward superstructure. The ship entered service in 1916 and in the same year took part in the largest naval clash of that war, at the Skagerrak; after hits that caused extensive flooding of the forward part of the hull, it was abandoned by the crew and sunk. The model captures the state of the ship in 1916.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 scale the cleanness of the work decides more than the number of parts. First think through the way of displaying it: with the full hull variant a stand or drilled brass supports come in handy. Sand the parting line of the two halves of the hull carefully and fill it if need be, and only then glue the decks on. Build the superstructures, masts and gun turrets as separate sub-assemblies and fit them only after the base color has been sprayed, otherwise they are hard to mask. Work with very thin cement and apply it with the tip of a brush, so that small parts are not flooded. Do the spraying with an airbrush in thin layers, otherwise the fine engraved details of the decks will be lost. At the end a darker wash in the recesses, a restrained dry brush on the edges and matte varnish all help; glue any photo-etched railings on at the very end with cyanoacrylate glue.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers focused on the navies of World War I
  • Builders of small scales who want a ship with a full hull on a stand
  • Collectors building up a series of German battlecruisers in a uniform scale
  • More advanced beginners willing to work with small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

That the model has the hull below the waterline as well and is built as a complete vessel. A waterline version has the hull cut off at the water and is seated into a diorama with water.

Rather for a more advanced builder. The 1:700 scale means very small parts, with which tweezers, a sharp scalpel and thin cement pay off.

With the full hull variant a stand or a base is recommended. Whether one is included in the package is stated on the box.
