This kit in 1:72 scale belongs to the Avrocar Racer X series, in which the FLY brand treats the shape of the experimental Avrocar disc airplane as a racing machine. The individual boxes of the series differ from one another by an additional designation in the name; this one carries the designation Fly. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the schemes offered are stated on the packaging of the kit. The model is intended to be glued and sprayed; it is not a finished product.
The basis of the shape is the Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar, an experimental machine of disc plan form tested at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. In the middle of the disc a large rotor turned, driven by three small jet engines, and the air left through peripheral slots; the airplane was to take off and land vertically. The trials showed, however, that the machine was stable only just above the ground, lost controllability at height, and the program was stopped. It is precisely the unusual shape that makes the Avrocar a rewarding subject for free modeling treatment in the spirit of what if.
A circular plan form means a long peripheral joint between the upper and lower parts. Dry-fit the parts first, therefore, glue the joint section by section with thin cement for plastic and fill any gaps with putty. Once filled, work the sanding from coarser to finer grit and finally polish the area, because every irregularity shows on a large smooth surface. Lay down a primer before painting, which will at the same time reveal any scratches left. A racing finish is sprayed from the bottom up, that is, the light base area first, then masked stripes and finally a gloss varnish under the decals.
