A model of the Douglas DC-8 airliner in the Series 30 version in 1:144 scale, the scale that is the most widespread for airliners and makes it possible to build a comparable collection even in an ordinary display case. According to the name this is the release in Swissair markings. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Douglas DC-8 was a four-engine jet airliner that first flew at the end of the 1950s and became the American answer to the first generation of jet airliners. Series 30 was the long-range version intended for long-haul and transatlantic routes, with a higher takeoff weight and a greater fuel load than the version for domestic service. Swissair was among the European carriers that took the DC-8 into service in the early 1960s and operated it on long-haul routes for a number of years. The long slender fuselage and the strongly swept wing give the type a profile that could not be confused with anything else in the traffic of the day.
With airliners it is the surface that decides. The fuselage is long and the joint between its two halves runs along its whole length, so it pays to try the parts dry first, fill the seam carefully and sand it down through progressively finer grits until it is smooth. Polishing follows, because a glossy airline finish brings out every unevenness. Apply the paint in thin coats with a spray gun and mask the boundary between the upper and lower fuselage precisely. The metal surfaces of the underside and the engine nacelles need a well prepared, smooth base. Before the decals, go over the surface with gloss varnish, and once they are dry flatten it according to the sheen you want to keep. The windows are often handled by masking and spraying, which looks cleaner than clear parts glued in.
