An injection-molded plastic kit of the unusual Soviet machine A-90 Orlyonok in 1:144 scale from the Russian brand Zvezda. It is an ekranoplan, a ground-effect vehicle that moves just above the surface of the water using the ground effect. The model is made up of a two-part fuselage, massive wings and tail surfaces; at this scale it comes out as a remarkably long and striking piece for the display case. The package holds clear parts and a decal sheet.
The A-90 Orlyonok (the little eagle) was a Soviet transport ekranoplan from the design bureau of Rostislav Alexeyev. It was neither an aircraft nor a ship in the usual sense: the machine glided a few meters above the water on a cushion of air beneath its short wings, and so combined the speed of an aircraft with the carrying capacity of a vessel. It served the naval infantry for the rapid carriage of troops and equipment through a hinged nose section of the fuselage. Only three were built and the machine is among the most fascinating means of transport of the Cold War.
Watch the fit of the large parts of the fuselage and the wings: fill the long joints and sand them down. Mask the glazing of the cabin before spraying. Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic. Lay a primer on and spray with an airbrush; a two-tone naval scheme with a light underside and a darker upper surface is typical. A fine panel wash and restrained highlights on the metal surfaces will give the model depth without overdoing it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
