An extensive conversion set that turns the Mazda RX-7 coupe of the third generation into the wide-body form from a Japanese tuner. The target kit is the Tamiya one.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mazda RX-7 of the third generation, listed at the factory as the FD3S, was built from 1991 and was the last of its kind. It was powered by a twin-rotor Wankel engine with a pair of turbochargers connected in sequence, so the smaller one spun up at once and the larger came in only at higher revs. The result was a smooth delivery of power that piston units of the time could hardly offer, and a weight below the 1300 kilogram mark.
The target kit is the Tamiya one; it is bought separately.
The set carries into plastic the so-called wide body from a Japanese tuner, one of the boldest treatments ever created for this car. The original shapes disappear under new panels: the nose takes on a different outline, the sides are widened and the tail is closed by a different lid. The scale version took this form from the film series about street racing, where the car in an orange and black finish was among the most conspicuous machines of the whole part.
The wide-body rebuild appeared in the middle of the first decade of this century and almost at once became one of the most copied treatments there is. At shows you still meet cars carrying it, and in the modeling range it is one of the most sought-after shapes of Japanese tuning.
The extent of the rebuild matches the most comprehensive items in the brand's range. The original body has to be reworked, the large resin panels put together and the gaps leveled with putty, so that the transitions are not visible under the paint. The work suits a modeler who has done a similar job before.
The large surfaces call for an airbrush. With parts of this size even coverage practically cannot be held with a brush.
