A resin detail accessory in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Brengun. It is not a model of an aircraft, but a set of RATO takeoff rockets intended for a model of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk carrier attack aircraft. On the real subject the cylinders were hung on the sides of the rear fuselage, and on a model they add a striking and not very often seen element that suits a scene capturing a takeoff in particular. The number of parts and any mountings are given on the packaging.
The abbreviation RATO stands for rocket-assisted takeoff. Short-burning rocket motors were hung on the fuselage of an aircraft and added thrust in the most critical phase of a takeoff, that is, during the run with a high takeoff weight, in heat, at high altitude or from a short strip. Once they had burned out the cylinders were jettisoned. On the light Douglas A-4 Skyhawk attack aircraft this option was used where no catapult or sufficiently long runway was available. The Skyhawk itself was a compact single-engine machine with a delta wing that did not have to be folded for stowage on a deck.
Wash the resin in lukewarm water with dish soap before painting. On cylindrical parts, cut the casting blocks off with a saw so that the circular cross section is not deformed, and level the surface by sanding wet. They are attached with cyanoacrylate glue; with hung parts a gel variant works well, as it gives time to align the symmetry of both sides. The rockets are usually different in color from the skin of the aircraft and they carry technical lettering, so paint them separately and glue them on only to a finished model. If you are building a takeoff scene, a discreet smoke effect behind the nozzle suits it - but in moderation, as an overdone soot trail easily gives the scale away.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
