A detail accessory for the engine compartment of a model car in 1:24 scale from Yamamoto Model Parts. It is not a kit of a car: it is a set of forced induction parts for the 2JZ inline six-cylinder engine, that is, the engine which made the fourth-generation Toyota Supra famous. The set follows on from the Tamiya 24123 kit.
The real subject. The 2JZ engine is a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with a cast-iron block whose structure takes markedly higher outputs than those it was tuned for in production. That is exactly what made it a legend of the tuning scene: the turbocharged version in the Supra belonged in the 1990s among the best of Japanese production, and in modifying practice the engine became one of the most frequently rebuilt units of all. A rebuild of the forced induction - a different turbocharger, different manifolds, an intercooler and piping - is an absolute classic on it.
What that means for a model. Boxed kits tend to have the engine compartment simplified and stock. With an add-on turbo set you turn it into a modified car, which makes sense mainly on models with an opening hood or on builds where the engine is presented on its own. Take note: the manufacturer also offers a set with a pair of turbochargers for the same engine; choose according to the forced induction configuration you want to build.
Before gluing, put the parts together dry and try them in the engine compartment, as forced induction takes up room and sometimes the mounting has to be altered. Degrease and prime the surfaces. Credibility comes from the contrast of materials: cast-iron parts in dark gray with a hint of rust, aluminum ones in a matte metallic color, the intercooler piping in bright aluminum or in a colored anodized finish. The joints of the piping can be suggested with thin strips of adhesive film as clamps. Finally unify it all with a dark wash, so that the details stand out.
It is an accessory for a model, not a kit of a car. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
