1:32 F-14A/D helmet and dress sewing markings VF-2 VF-101 VF-31 decal sheet

HAD models 1:32: markings for the helmets and patches of F-14A/D crews

A set of waterslide decals in 1:32 scale intended for figures of pilots and weapon systems officers. They are applied to flight helmets and to flight suits, where they take the place of hand-painted patches. In 1:32 scale a figure is already big enough for missing detail on its kit to show, and at the same time too small for tiny markings to be painted reliably with a brush. A decal is therefore the more practical and cleaner route.

Which squadrons the markings relate to

The name of the sheet refers to the squadrons VF-2, VF-101 and VF-31 of the US Navy, which flew Tomcats. VF-101 served as the type's training unit, while VF-2 and VF-31 were combat squadrons that in the late period of service also got the F-14D version. The set therefore suits models of the Tomcat in both the A and D versions and the figures you build with them.

Application tips

The decals are waterslide. Cut an individual design out as close as possible, soak it for a few seconds in lukewarm water and let it rest on a paper towel until the film starts to move. The base has to be smooth and coated with gloss varnish, otherwise air is trapped under the decal and a matte silvery patch appears. On the helmet and in the folds of the sleeve a softener will help to pull the film down to the shape. Blot the excess water away with a cotton bud and, once dry, go over the whole figure with a matte varnish, so that the edge of the film disappears and the cloth of the uniform looks like cloth.

Who the set is for

• Modelers building the F-14 in 1:32 scale with a crew figure
• Collectors whose figures lack faithful kit and markings
• Makers of dioramas on a carrier deck
• Anyone who would rather apply a decal than paint a marking the size of a pinhead

It is not a model or a figure but accessory decals. Figures, paints, glue and varnish are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
