About product

Kawasaki KDA-2 Type 88-II in 1:72 scale (Sova Model, limited edition)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese army reconnaissance aircraft Kawasaki KDA-2 in the Type 88-II version, that is the later stage of development of the reconnaissance line. The box comes out in the limited edition of the brand Sova Model. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the choice of decals are given by the instructions and the packaging of the kit.

The real subject

The Type 88 was a two-seat single-engine biplane meant for long-range reconnaissance, photography and the direction of artillery fire. It grew out of the German school of design, which the engineer Richard Vogt brought to Kawasaki, and it was driven by a liquid-cooled V12 BMW VI built in Japan under license. The airframe had fixed landing gear, open cockpits and a classic set of wings with struts and rigging wires. The reconnaissance line went through step-by-step changes and the designation Type 88-II belongs to its later form. The aircraft served in the front line of the Japanese Army Air Force at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s and was among the most numerous machines of its kind at the time.

Building and painting tips

The most demanding part of the build is settling the upper wing on symmetrically. Let the fuselage and the lower wing cure thoroughly, glue the struts on one by one and support the assembly with a simple jig, so that it does not sit askew on you. A liquid cement for plastic drawn into the joint holds better than a drop laid on the surface. Finish the interior and the engine cowling before the airframe is closed. A base coat will reveal grooves left by sanding and even the surface out before the covering color. Leave the rigging wires to the very end, because stretched monofilament or a fine elastic thread is the easiest thing to work with. Apply the decals onto a gloss base and even the finished model out with a matte varnish. A fine dark wash in the engraved lines will bring out the division of the skin without the model looking artificial.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of Japanese interwar aviation in 1:72 scale
  • Collectors who are building the whole series of versions of the Type 88
  • Anyone interested in limited editions and less usual themes
  • The moderately advanced with experience of biplanes

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Count on a build for the moderately advanced, because biplane geometry and rigging wires call for precision and a calm hand.
