This set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard is intended for working up a model of the British Austin K2/Y ambulance in 1:35 scale. Photo-etched parts of thin metal sheet replace or supplement the plastic parts wherever injection-molded plastic cannot be thin enough: on grilles, brackets, catches, hinges and sheet-metal strips. The set is not a kit and cannot be used without the basic plastic model.
The Austin K2/Y was a British truck converted into an ambulance. It was built on the chassis of a two-ton truck, had a tall box body with stretchers inside and was used by British units and by medical services in all the main theaters. The tall flat body and the divided front end give the model a large number of flat surfaces and fine fittings, which is exactly where photo-etched parts show to best effect.
Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and clean up the remains of the tabs with a fine file so that the part seats without a gap. Run the bends along the scored grooves, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool or between two steel blades. Degrease the metal and glue it with super glue in the smallest possible amount; on larger surfaces a slow-setting epoxy helps, as it allows the part to be adjusted. Apply an adhesion primer before painting. On vehicles it pays to fit the photo-etch before the final weathering, so that washes and pigments run into metal and plastic alike and the surface looks uniform.
The set is an add-on to a kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
