The Das Stahlwerk base from RT-Diorama is diorama groundwork for 1:35 scale. The German name refers to a steelworks, that is to a heavy industrial plant. It is not a kit of a vehicle: it is a setting into which the modeler places their own vehicles, figures and other accessories.
Among industrial subjects a steelworks is distinctive in how rough it is. Massive walls, robust structures and large openings give the scene a different weight from ordinary city building, and vehicles in such a setting look smaller rather than larger, an effect that is hard to achieve in a diorama any other way. A plant of this type suits views from the end of the Second World War, when the fighting moved into industrial areas, as well as postwar and civilian scenes or an abandoned and decaying works without a single figure.
With rough industrial masses, less is more. Let the large areas speak and do not fill them with small details, or the scene will lose that sense of scale which is the reason such a subject is chosen in the first place. Place the vehicles so that they overlap at least partly with the mass of the building, because overlap creates depth. Try the layout out dry and look at the view from the eye level of a viewer at the display case. An industrial scene also takes side light or backlight well, which brings out the structure of the surfaces.
