Copper State Models, a brand based in Riga in Latvia, has long specialized in the equipment and the figures of the First World War. This figure set in 1:35 scale captures a German member of the crew of an armored car handling ammunition, that is at a moment that in a diorama explains at once what is going on in the scene. In subject it follows on from further German figures of the same line.
Replenishing ammunition was among the routine and at the same time demanding tasks on armored cars. The German vehicles were as a rule armed with MG 08 machine guns, whose belts were supplied in sheet-metal boxes. Those had to be got into the cramped fighting compartment from outside, usually with the help of the whole crew. Compared with the Allied ones, the German armored cars were committed in smaller numbers, mainly on the Eastern Front, in the rear and to security duties. That is precisely why their crews are a rewarding subject for scenes that are not combat scenes but show the ordinary running of a unit.
A figure with a load in its hands has a naturally shifted center of gravity and comes across as dynamic in a diorama. It combines well with a figure at a weapon or with a commander, which gives a legible trio with clear roles. For matching the colors of a scene, go by period photographs, because German field gray changed in shade over the course of the war.
