About product

German armored vehicle commander (SS), Second World War, 1:35

A resin figure in 1:35 scale from the Polish maker Mantis Miniatures. It is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up, assembled and painted. The figure represents a commander of a German armored vehicle of the Second World War period; the unit designation in the name is a factual historical detail that identifies the cut of the uniform and the equipment. It is not a finished collector's model, nor is it a kit of a vehicle.

The sculpting

The figure is sculpted in the pose typical of a commander leaning out of the turret hatch, that is with the upper half of the body above the outline of the vehicle. Three things matter here from the modeling point of view: the cut of the uniform (the short lapelled jacket and the long trousers of the armored troops), the headgear, and the additional equipment, typically binoculars and headphones with a throat microphone. It is precisely these elements that decide whether the figure fits the period of the scene. The resin casting renders the folds of the cloth and the small metal fittings more crisply than injection-molded plastic, which shows once a wash goes on.

Tips for working and painting

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water to deal with the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and wet-sand the surfaces with respiratory protection. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); plastic cement has no effect on resin. Apply a thin primer before painting. Dark uniforms have to be lightened far more strongly than pale ones, otherwise they merge into a shapeless mass in the finished scene: work from the base shade through the lightened surfaces to the edges, and only then use a light wash. Build the flesh tones up in thin glazes. Try the figure in the hatch dry before gluing it in, so that it sits on the axis of the turret.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of dioramas with German armor in 1:35
  • Modelers who need a figure for a turret hatch
  • More experienced builders familiar with working in resin
  • Anyone who cares about accurate period uniforms and equipment

The figure is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted resin casting. The model of the vehicle, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is supplied as an unpainted resin casting that has to be cleaned up, assembled and painted.

It is sculpted to go in the turret hatch of a German armored vehicle in 1:35 scale. We recommend trying it dry before gluing it in.

Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Cement for plastic models does not hold on resin.

Lighten it more strongly than seems right: in 1:35 the folds otherwise merge. Work from the base through the lightened surfaces and edges to a final light wash.
