This photo-etched set in 1:35 scale is meant for completing plastic kits of two American artillery pieces of the Second World War: the 3-inch M5 anti-tank gun and the 105 mm M2A1 howitzer. Both weapons share a related carriage, which makes it possible to handle them with a single set labeled two in one. It is not a model of a weapon but a metal accessory for the modeler; the set is cut for AFV Club kits.
The American 105 mm M2A1 howitzer was the basic artillery weapon of the American army for fire at longer ranges and used a wheeled split trail carriage. The 3-inch M5 anti-tank gun was meant for direct fire against armored targets and used a carriage derived from the same design family. It is precisely the carriage, the shield, the handwheels, the trails and the small clamps that make up a quantity of thin sheet and small parts on a model.
Artillery sets are among those where the ratio of small parts to the surface of the model is the highest. It pays to work over a light-colored surface with no gaps, to have two pairs of tweezers at hand, one straight and one curved, and to cut the parts off the fret only at the moment you really need them. Hold a part you have cut off with the tip of a scalpel, so that it does not spring away. Form the handwheels and other circular features around a suitable roller and join them with an overlap rather than butt to butt. Before gluing, check on every part which side is to face up; photo-etched parts often have fine relief on one side only.
A photo-etched set is an accessory for modelers; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
